Tattoo aftercare

Healthy looking saniderm 3 days after tattoo was done

Saniderm/Second Skin

Recommended anywhere from 24 hours to a week, depending on comfortability.  Saniderm helps the tattoo heal, can be worn in the shower and is "breathable".  Any liquid under the second skin is plasma from the tattoo and is NORMAL.  Remove saniderm in the shower and continue with aftercare.  Note: Some people can feel irritation from the adhesive, in this case remove in the shower and continue with normal aftercare.

Cleaning

Make sure and clean your tattoo at least 3 times a day!  Use fragrance free antibacterial soap and be sure to PAT dry.  Do NOT Rub your tattoo!

Moisturize

It is extremely important that you keep your tattoo moisturized!  We recommend using a Fragrance Free Lotion a minimum of 4 times per day!  Make sure and moisturize after washing and drying the tattoo, and any time the tattoo starts to feel DRY.  Letting is dry up and scab up is the worst thing you can do to your tattoo.  Make sure and use non scented lotion every chance you get!  Some great brands are Lubriderm and Curel.   Some people prefer to use ointments instead of lotion and thats fine as long as they are non scented and do not have petroleum jelly.

Things to AVOID

  1. Do NOT let your tattoo soak underwater.  Take a couple weeks off Swimming!
  2. Keep it covered if you are planning on being out in the sun.
  3. Do NOT wash with extremely HOT or COLD water.
  4. Do NOT pick at scabs or scratch at it if it is itching! This can cause scarring!
  5. DO NOT use Vaseline Neosporin or ANYTHING with petroleum jelly.  It clogs the pours.
  6. DO NOT over apply ointments.  Make sure the tattoo can breathe!
  7. Try and avoid extremely tight clothing that rubs against your fresh tattoo.

Remember!

The first half of the work is done by the artist and the second half of the work is done by YOU!  Its just two weeks of care in exchange for a lifetime of a tattoo looking great!

Also if you are planning to take a trip or do something fun like going to the beach or on a hike, make sure and get the tattoo at least 2 weeks in advance or wait till you get back so that you don't have to miss out on the activities!

*Please keep in mind!  Tattoos in areas like lips fingers palms etc heal differently than other parts of the skin, so keep that in mind and be extra diligent when taking care of these tattoos.

  • What about Aquafor?

Aquafor is fine, just make sure and use a thin layer!

  • Is there a good time of year to get tattooed?

All year is fine, but winter is great just because you are bundled up and out of the sun!
